Winsor 2019-2020 Sports Recap

2019-20 WINTER SPORTS RECAP
Thanks to the many coaches who shared recaps of their winter sports seasons! Read on for summaries, photo galleries and individual honors from Winsor’s five fall sports.
Varsity Basketball
EIL 9 – 4, Overall 12 – 10
Winsor Varsity Basketball finished the season with a record of 12-10 overall and placed 3rd in the EIL with a record of 9-4. Throughout the season, the team never gave up and was able to overcome many adversities as 15% of the season (47 games total spread across 8 players) were missed due to injury. Their winning season this year speaks to the tremendous determination, grit, and work ethic of each player day in and day out. They closed out the season at home with an exciting 3 point overtime victory over Lexington Christian Academy. For the season Winsor averaged 24.1 rebounds per game, and 16.2 free throw attempts per contest, which is a testament to the team’s aggressive style of play. The varsity team was led by 3 senior captains, Michaela Stanfield ’20, Caitlin Bracken ’20, and Eva Shin ’20, who each played varsity for 4 years, and who led by example every time they set foot on the court. Thanks to the team’s continued hard work and development, there’s no question Winsor will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the league.

JV Basketball
EIL 2 – 9, Overall 4 – 11
The Winsor JV Basketball season was filled with continual growth, with eight new faces joining the team, bringing a range of talents, skills, and handwork. The team was rounded out by two veteran players who continued to provide instrumental elements. Every practice and game the coaches saw passion, desire and fire to play the very best basketball.  Some highlights of the season included a comeback win at home against Portsmouth Abbey and a 1 point win, on the road, over Dana Hall.  Co-captains Jenna Peterson ’20 and Sophie Yates ’20 have been a part of JV Basketball for four seasons and continued to contribute significantly to the growth of the team. On and off the court, their contributions allowed us to be a family – whether celebrating accomplishments, and offering support when needed.

Varsity Ice Hockey
EIL 3 – 5 – 1, Overall  6 – 9 – 1
Winsor Varsity Hockey welcomed several new members at the beginning of the 2019-2020 season and hit the ground running with tough games against Governor’s and Pingree. After celebrating the beginning of winter break with three close games at the Portsmouth Abbey invitational tournament, the team returned ready to tackle the heart of the EIL schedule.  With a lot of hard work day in and day out, Winsor hockey reached a high point of the season with a decisive 5-2 victory against Newton Country Day School in a must-win game during the last week of the regular season. The team capped off another successful season by qualifying for the EIL tournament, for the third consecutive year.  The team was led by senior co-captains Sophia Copeman ’20 and Elizabeth Martin ’20 whose commitment and devotion to the team will leave a lasting impact on the program for years to come.

Varsity Swimming
EIL 3 – 2, Overall  6 – 4
It has been another successful winning season for the Winsor Varsity Swim Team. The team had some tough competition and finished the regular season with a combined record of 6 – 4 and an EIL record of 3 – 2.  In the EIL championship meet, the team finished a close second behind Dana Hall.  Our championships were a different format this year, as we combined the EIL and ISL teams to increase competition and excitement. And when the scoring was finished, Winsor won the combined EIL/ISL trophy by 8 points, swimming faster than all the EIL and ISL teams combined.  Special thanks to the senior tri-captains Caroline Nolan ’20, Avery Beber ’20, and Lucie King ’20, who led the team through the season with their positivity, endless support and consistent, inspired dedication.

Winsor swimmers broke four school records at EILs: 200 Medley Relay (Holiday Host ’23, Ava McLaughlin Leeman ’22, Ashley Xu ’23, Caroline Bae ’24, 200 Free (Ava McLaughlin Leeman ’22), 200 IM (Leah Leeman), and the 100 Back (Holiday Host ’23).  14 Winsor swimmers went on to qualify to compete in the NEPSAC Swimming Championships, and the team placed 5th out of 10 teams, beating Thayer, St. Georges, Kent, Kingswood Oxford, & Worcester Academy.  For the team’s continued success this year, Coach Christina Baudis was named Co-Coach of the year, marking her 4th straight year being honored by her peers with this award.

JV Swimming
EIL 0 – 3, Overall 0 – 5
The season started off quickly for Winsor JV Swimming, combining some first time competitive swimmers with a rigorous practice schedule to help everyone get into great swimming shape as quickly as possible. After a close loss at Dana Hall, we had over a month until the next meet so we spent time getting faster and having our own time trials to keep the competitive spirit alive. The next meet against Dana was incredibly close, and Winsor lost by only 10 points, with multiple Winsor swimmers swimming lifetime bests. Over the course of the final 3 meets of the season and practice time trial, every team member recorded a lifetime best in an event with some girls even beating some old times by as much as 10 seconds! The amount of growth this season was incredible.

Varsity Squash
EIL  4 – 0, Overall 15 – 1
Without a doubt, this season was one of the most successful seasons for the Winsor Varsity Squash team. The Wildcats finished their season matches with 15 wins and only one loss. The team was led by captains Kelsey Abbrecht ’21 and Kaitlin Kolb ’21 and defeated nearly every girls’ squash program within 50 miles of Boston, with the one exception being Phillips Andover. Winsor Varsity Squash captured the EIL title for the 11th consecutive year, claiming the title without dropping a single match. Their other biggest wins include victories over Nobles, Milton, Exeter, St Paul’s, Groton, St Mark’s and Brooks schools.

Last season, the team set a goal to make it into the top 20 squash teams in the country, an ambitious goal the team crushed this season when they reached a very impressive 13th place at the US High School Nationals out of 85 teams! We can proudly say that Winsor’s squash program is now among the best of the best in the country.

The team capped off their already successful season at the New England Championships with another incredible result, tying with Nobles for 5th place. Winsor’s squash team is now ranked 5th in New England, an achievement reached only once before, back in 2014. And with no seniors on the team, Winsor Varsity Squash has a bright future. With this team’s success this season, Coach Szombati  was named the EIL Coach of the Year for the 10th time.

JV 2 Squash
EIL 3 – 0, Overall 11 – 1 – 1
JV2 squash, a team of 20 players, had a very impressive season. Not only did they play and win more matches than in previous seasons, the improvement from start to finish was undeniable. The team finished the season with 11 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie, with their only loss against Milton and only tie with Fay, both co-ed teams. Led by captains Caroline Friendly ’23, Audrey Copeman ’24 and Ava Hosea ’22, the JV2 squash team’s work ethic was simply outstanding. Whether during fitness, on court drilling, or challenge matches, the players kept their smiles throughout the session, supported one another and showed outstanding sportsmanship on court. The wins against schools like Nobles, Dana Hall, NCDS and BB&N show how far Winsor’s JV2 program has come this past season.
JV 1 Squash
Overall 16-0
This season was by far the strongest season ever for the JV1 squash team. They played 16 team matches in total and they won every single one of them! Not only undefeated this season, they found no competition in the Boston area at all, with the strength of the team unmatched against squash powerhouse schools like Nobles, Exeter, St Paul’s and Milton. With no seniors graduating from the team, the future is bright for JV Squash.
