January 4–8, 2023, — The British Junior Open is considered the world’s most prestigious junior squash tournament, attended by elite junior squash players from all over the world. This year, two Winsor students, Caroline Eielson ’24 and Judy Liu ’29 competed amongst the 50 athletes representing Team USA, earning high scores in each of their divisions.
The annual event takes place in Birmingham, U.K., with boys and girls teams competing across five age divisions. Said Judy Liu ’29 on the experience: “it was really eye opening to see all the top junior players from all over the world together in one place. …All the USA gear we wore really channeled USA pride, especially since most other countries aren’t unified as a team but more as individual players who happen to be from the same place.” The tournament spanned five days, and junior athletes were paired with roommates for the competition. “Having a roommate was one of the best parts of the trip,” Judy recalled. “It really meant a lot to me to be able to share the whole experience with another person when squash is usually a solitary sport.” Judy’s mother Yuansha Li P ’29 chaperoned the students on their journey to the U.K. and was a source of support for the Winsor delegation.
Competing in the U17 draw, Caroline Eielson ’24 finished 6th place out of 64 players, and Judy Liu ’29 earned an 11th place finish out of the 48 players in the U13 draw. Caroline and Judy both play on the Winsor Varsity Squash team, coached by Szilvi Szombati.
Congratulations, Caroline and Judy!
