Marcus Young
Director of Technology
B.S., Information Management/Technology
Syracuse University
As a young person, Marcus Young learned firsthand just how crucial relationships with trusted adults at school can be for students. As he says, “I had teachers in my life who, if not for them, my life would be far different, and not for the better.” As Winsor’s director of technology, he strives to be among the adults who consistently make a positive difference in their students’ lives, whether by providing a safe space to share thoughts, feelings, and ideas, or just to relax and feel connected to themselves and other members of the community. To Marcus, the student experience extends far beyond the classroom.
Marcus attended a military high school where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball, while also participating in artistic extracurriculars like DJ club, and the range of activities that occupy students’ time as part of a corps of cadets. As an undergraduate at Syracuse, he served as a resident advisor, participated in student government, assumed a leadership role in the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, and provided tech support for the vice chancellor’s office. His experiences as a student—both learning and working—primed him for a career in education.
His work in independent schools began at the Brookwood School, where he served as a technology support specialist and network administrator. In 2014, he moved to Winsor to be the school’s director of technology. Marcus has always made sure his job made room for him to teach and act as an advisor to students, and often, as well, to coach. He spent 23 years coaching lacrosse, 9 of which were at the collegiate level.
At Winsor, Marcus appreciates the ever-evolving nature of his work, and the opportunity it affords him to engage with individuals from across the Winsor community. He is inspired daily by the students he encounters. As he says, “We get to help instill in our students the strong sense of self that will help them get through the challenges they face, and create the kind of change that will continue to support future generations. It’s good work.”
